Transfers of radiolarites and other exotics in the Moravian Gravettian

  • Original language description

The contribution presents a raw material study of six Gravettian lithic assemblages from key Moravian sites (Milovice I and IV, Pavlov I, Dolní Věstonice I, Předmostí I and Petřkovice I) to reconstruct mobility and exchange networks of Upper Paleolithic hunter-gatherers. Combining stereomicroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and LA-ICP-MS, it refines the provenance of radiolarites and other exotic lithologies. The results show a dominance of erratic flints, complemented by long-distance transfers of Krakow and Ożarów cherts, limnic cherts, Hungarian radiolarites and obsidian, with most radiolarites sourced from the West Carpathians and some possibly from Austrian deposits. Compared to the Aurignacian, NE–SW movements of raw materials intensified in the Gravettian, while changing use of other lithologies and the role of the White Carpathians as a contact zone are highlighted.
