Radiolarite artifacts of the Upper Palaeolithic and their chemical fingerprints
Original language description
The contribution presents a raw material study of eight Aurignacian and Gravettian lithic assemblages from key Moravian regions to reconstruct the mobility and exchange networks of Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers. Combining stereomicroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and LA-ICP-MS, it refines the provenance of radiolarite artefacts and other exotic lithologies. The results confirm the dominance of erratic flints, alongside long-distance transfers of Bűkk metarhyolite, Krakow and Ożarów cherts, limnic cherts, Hungarian radiolarites and obsidian, with most radiolarites sourced from the West Carpathians and some showing chemical fingerprints consistent with Austrian deposits or local Miocene gravels. The study highlights intensified NE–SW raw material transfers in the Gravettian, changing patterns in the use of specific lithologies, and the role of the White Carpathians as a possible contact zone between Moravian and Slovak raw material provinces and the groups exploiting them.
