Use of 3D Surface Analysis to Determine the Strategy of AWJ Milling of Hard Ceramic Material
Original language description
High-speed abrasive water jet (AWJ) has a wide range of applications such as cutting, turning, milling. AWJ milling technology is particularly suitable for materials that are difficult to process with conventional technologies. However, it is difficult to carry out inspection during high-speed abrasive water jet milling and material removal conditions are very different from normal cutting conditions. The production of milled parts is relying primarily on the operator's experience. This paper presents a 3D surface analysis to determine the strategy of milling of hard ceramic material using high-speed abrasive water jet. The behavior of AWJ technology in two different milling strategies was investigated. The 3D scanning of the examined samples created by milling of high-speed abrasive water jet made it possible to correlate surface area and surface profile parameters. The results show that both machining strategies can remove the same volume of material, but we obtain significantly different geometry of the machined part. It is found that the milling depth and machined surface quality can be reasonably controlled through the selection of process parameters.
