Pronunciation—a neglected topic in textbooks of Standard Chinese?
Original language description
The sound structure of Standard Chinese (SC) is rather difficult. However, in SC pedagogy, pronunciation tends to be overshadowed by the Chinese script, vocabulary, and grammar. If some sort of intelligible speech without a heavy foreign accent is a pedagogic goal, pronunciation needs due attention––both in the classroom and in textbooks. Current textbooks have attractive graphic designs and are equipped with audio files. However, the overall space devoted to pronunciation is mostly insufficient. The descriptions tend to be elementary and rarely incorporate the results of linguistic research. An explanation of the features of connected speech (prosodic features) is often entirely missing. This chapter compares the treatment of SC pronunciation in several textbooks. Two textbook series are assessed in detail: Practical Chinese Reader (an old textbook published in the PRC in 1981) and Integrated Chinese (a current textbook published in the USA in 2017). A few other textbooks (such as Hanyu Jiaocheng 1999, New Practical Chinese Reader 2002 or HSK 2014) are briefly mentioned. Thereafter, concrete topics in SC pronunciation are discussed. The chapter makes the case for more refined treatments of the subject and the use of metalinguistic instruction. It concludes by advocating for the coverage of some new topics, such as the hierarchical model of SC syllable structure and explanations of acoustic correlates of stress and non-stress.
