Vocabulary of Belarusian Subdialects as an Example of Language Contacts in the Baltic-Slavic Borderland: a Project Concept

  • Original language description

Among all levels of language, vocabulary is the one which is most open to loanwords. It is clearly visible in the Belarusian subdialects in the Belarusian-Latvian-Russian borderland, where Finnic (Baltic-Finnic) languages and Indo-European (Baltic, Slavic, and Germanic) languages have been in contact for many centuries. The project presented below is intende to comprehensively describe the Belarusian lexis (general Belarusian vocabulary, typical of the north-eastern dialect, and that of the so-called north-western dialectal zone) and its numerous borrowings from the Slavic languages (Russian, Polish), from the Baltic languages (Proto-Baltic, Lithuanian, Latvian (including Latgalian sub-dialects)), from the Germanic languages (German, Yiddish), and the Baltic-Finnic languages (Estonian and Livonian). The analysis is based on materials gathered by the author during dialectological expeditions (in total approx. 300 hours of interviews), and on The Dictionary of the Folk Belarusian Subdialects of North-Western Belarus and its Borderland.
