The chapter seeks to unearth the meaning(s) of the positive outcome of the 2003 referendum in the Czech Republic on the country?s EU accession. The accession was a widely accepted aim, supported both by the society at large and by most of its elites. Itwas loaded with important symbolic meaning and was considered to be a higher-order interest in comparision with the more pragmatic expectations regarding the membership. But it would be wrong to rely on the positive results of the referendum and considerthat the new member countries are overtly Euro-enthusiastic or will remain so. The contents and conditions of the membership, and especially its concrete political and economic implications, have yet to be defined. It will be these conditions that willfinally decide about the society?s attitude toward the EU.

Kapitola analyzuje význam kladného výsledku referenda o vstupu ČR do EU konaného v r. 2003. Veřejnost i většina elit vyslovovala členství v EU podporu a považovala je za cíl vyššího řádu, jehož symbolický význam byl důležitější než pragmatické okolnostitohoto členství. Přesto však pozitivní výsledek referenda v ČR, stejně jako v ostatních nových členských zemích, nezaručuje do budoucna jejich proevropský entuziasmus. Obsah a konkrétní okolnosti členství, zejména jeho konkrétní okolnosti politické a ekonomické, které se budou ještě vyjasňovat, nakonec rozhodnou o tom, jak se bude společnost v nových členských zemích k EU stavět.
