Tom Wengraf: Biographical- narative method in social sciences
Original language description
Tom Wengraf is co-editor of two seminal books The Turn to biographical methods in social science: principles and applications and severally reprinted Qualitative research interviewing: biographic narrative and semistructured methods. Tom Wengraf introduces Biographical-Narrative Interpretative Method (BNIM) of data collection and analysis. This method allows you to explore historical events, social trends and phenomena through their reflection in individual life trajectories. It also maps the development of subjectivity (personal identity) in the context of key life events as they occur throughout the life cycle. The lecture was divided into two parts. Within the first hour block will be presented the technique of collecting biographical narrative data using the so-called BNIM interview, which has a clearly defined procedure consisting of three consecutive phases. Part of this lecture will be a practical demonstration of conducting a biographical narrative interview.
