A Dashed Hope: Pablo Picasso and the Communist Bloc during the Cold War
Original language description
An essay discussing the role of Pablo Picasso in politics and ideology in Czechoslovakia and Hungary during the 1950s. The article shows, how Czechoslovak official rhetoric divided between the reactionary and progressive Picasso, how Czechoslovak officials in Paris contacted Picasso several times during the 1950s, and how they tried to invite him to Czechoslovakia for the second Spartakiad in 1960. On the example of the letter of Béla Czobel to Picasso on 15 December 1956, now kept in Musée Picasso Archives in Paris, one can demonstrate the pressure of many intellectuals on Picasso to paint another, second, Guernica, now dedicated to Hungary.
