The Workshop Nationalism and Cosmopolitanism in Avant-Garde and Modernism: The Impact of WWI, organized by the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, follows the discussions initiated at the international symposium in Stockholm The European Artistic Avant-garde c. 1910-1930: Formations, Networks and Transnational Strategies (11-13 September 2013). It focuses on a particular aspect of the avant-garde and modernism, namely the clash of the national, transnational and cosmopolitan. In the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but to some extent also in Scandinavia, efforts towards national independence, mostly initiated in the 19th century and culminating during and after WWI, had an important cultural and artistic outcome. One of the important aims of the workshop is to set up a network of collaborators who are willing to work on the avant-garde on the periphery more closely and on a longer-term basis.
