The Birth of Photography in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.
Original language description
The paper deals with the idea of mechanical reproduction of images, art works and artefacts in the 1830s and 1840s, i.e. around the time of the invention of the daguerreotype, photographic drawing, calotype and other early photographic processes. It argues that the common denominator of the first photographic inventions was not the light sensitivity of the material used or the effort to capture the light image, but the attempts at mechanical reproduction, which dominated all areas of human activity at that time. In other words, photographic inventions can’t be separated from the jumble of inventions that appeared in the 1830s and 1840s and held the same promise: To mechanically reproduce images or objects in the sense of an automatic, fast and faithful multiplication of the model, with zero or negligible human interference, albeit in different ways and using different materials.
