  • Original language description

The exhibition Bromography: Known Unknown presents the outcomes of a research-based artistic project focused on the rediscovery and reinterpretation of bromography, a historically widespread yet today largely forgotten photographic reproduction technique. Developed within doctoral research and a grant-supported project at Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně, it combines archival study and experimental reconstructions of historical photochemical processes. A key aim is to verify bromography as a photochemical method in which the image forms in a light-sensitive emulsion and to compare historical bromographs with contemporary experimental reproductions. The installation includes approximately 60 research-based photographs produced using multiple photographic techniques, about 15 original bromographic postcards, and 2 photographs from the estate of Karel Podlipný, and it references interwar image circulation, including links to František Drtikol. An interpretive component explains the exhibited technologies and terminology, helping visitors understand material evidence of the processes and the differences between historical originals and contemporary reconstructions, while highlighting the cultural significance of reproduced photographic images.
