The Archive in Transition. Reframing Josef Sudek's Photographic Reproductions of Art
Original language description
During his lifetime, Czech photographer Josef Sudek became fascinated with photographic reproduction of works of art, which became a key element of both his business and artistic practices. After his death in 1976, about 20,000 photographs – positives and negatives depicting works of art – were donated to the photo library of the Institute of Art History at the Czech Academy of Sciences as part of Sudek’s archive. By relocating these photographs into a specialized art historical photo library, this part of Sudek’s work underwent an institutional transformation that changed the photographs’ uses and meanings. They lost their status as material objects, as well as their original historical, artistic, and social contexts and their relation to their author. Instead, they were engaged by their beholders as transparent mediators of the depicted objects. By returning to some of these lost features, some of the forgotten meanings and functions of this archive begin to reemerge. This also allows Sudek’s photographs of artworks to be used to identify unknown artists within the Czech art scene, enabling new research to be undertaken into Czech modernism, as well as reconsideration of Sudek’s archival practices as artistic gestures in their own right.
