Ionotropic NMDA and P2X1/5 receptors mediate synaptically induced Ca2+ signalling in cortical astrocytes

  • Original language description

These results demonstrate that activation of astroglial ionotropic NMDA and P2X1/5 receptors increases intracellular free calcium in cortical astrocytes when stimulated by endogenous agonists and synaptic release of neurotransmitters. These data suggestcontribution of NMDA and P2X1/5 receptors to astroglial calcium signalling, which may provide a specific mechanism for fast neuronal-glial signalling at the synaptic level.
