Adenosine and ATP Receptors in the Brain

  • Original language description

Here we review a widespread presence of both adenosine (P1) and P2 nucleotide receptors in the brain on both neurones and glial cells; the role of P1 and P2 receptors in neurone-glia interactions, in presynaptic neuromodulation (P1 receptors), in fast synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity (P2X receptors) and in presynaptic activities (P2Y receptors). Purinergic signalling is involved in neuropathology , such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy, trauma, ischaemia.
