Age-related changes in calbindin and calretinin immunoreactivity in the central auditory system of the rat

  • Original language description

Age-related changes in the expression of intracellular calcium buffers calbindin and calretinin were evaluated in the central auditory structures in two rat strains, the slowly aging Long-Evans and the fast aging Fischer 344 rats. Our results demonstrated significant age-related decrease in the number and volumes of immunoreactive neurons and decreased protein levels similarly in both rat strains regardless their differently preserved inner ear function. The decline in calbindin protein levels and number of calbindin expressing neurons was more pronounced in comparison with the changes in calretinin immunoreactivity. The observed age-related changes in the calbindin- and calretinin-expressing systems may contribute significantly to the deterioration ofhearing function known as central presbycusis.
