Í-opioid receptor modulation of Oxytocin and Vasopressin release in the Hypothalamic-Neurohypophysial System

  • Original language description

The Hypothalamic-Neurohypophysial System (HNS) in mammals controls diuresis and parturition through the release of the neuropeptides arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT). Neuroendocrine function in the HNS is modulated by opioids, either releasedendogenously or applied exogenously, by acting on mí- or kappa-selective opioid receptors. In the present research, we characterized the expression of both mí or kappa-opioid receptors and voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC) and provide evidence for adifferential targeting of channels in OT vs. AVP nerve terminals. We propose a model that can explain how opiate effects on VGCCs can directly mediate differences in the control of neurohypophysial OT and/or AVP release.
