Analysis of biomarkers in a Czech population exposed to heavy air pollution. Part I. Bulky DNA adducts

  • Original language description

The impact of air pollution on the subjects living in a heavily polluted Ostrava region and in the relatively clean capital city of Prague was investigated. The study was conducted in three sampling periods (winter 2009, summer 2009, winter 2010) differing in the concentrations of major air pollutants. Concentrations of studied air pollutants (benzo[a]pyrene, benzene) were significantly higher in the Ostrava region in all sampling periods. Despite this fact the levels of bulky DNA adducts in peripheralblood lymphocytes were significantly elevated in the Ostrava subjects only in winter 2009. During the other two sampling periods, the levels of bulky DNA adducts were higher in the Prague subjects. Multivariate analyses revealed that exposure to B[a]P and particulate matter < 2.5 ?m affected bulky DNA adduct levels in the Ostrava subjects, but not in subjects from Prague.
