Opioids, the Immune System and Stem Cells
Original language description
Opioid drugs are therapeutically used to relieve a severe pain. However, the use of opioids have numerous side effects. One of these effects is a decreased and impaired tissue healing observed after opioid administration or in opioid addicts. In this review we summarized the effects of morphine and other opioids on cells of the immune system and on various types of stem cells. Both immune and stem cells possess opioid receptors and their functions can be modified by opioid drugs. We conclude that the deleterious effects of opioid drugs on stem cells and cells of the immune system could be the reason for impaired healing observed after administration of opioids.
