    Wound Healing in Skin Defects

  • Original language description

Faulty wound healing is gradually becoming a global health care issue affecting millions of people worldwide, and poses a major threat and burden to public health and economic systems, as the general population ages and lifestyle choices deteriorate. Wound healing is a complex biological process orchestrated by the interplay of multiple factors including various types of cell, bioactive molecules and cues of the extracellular matrix. A disruption of the fine balance may lead to failure of the wound to close. Regenerative medicine provides several new approaches to novel wound dressings and/or skin substitutes, ranging from functionalization of the wound dressings to provide antibacterial protection or promote granulation tissue synthesis, to addressing the donor site shortage in case grafting is necessary to heal extensive skin defects.
