30 years with avian leukosis virus subgroup J. Can we get rid of it via biotechnology?
Original language description
Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (and quite recently also subgroup K) display all hallmarks of newly emerging infection, i.e. sudden appearance (via recombinantion of exogenous and endogenous retroviruses), rapid spread, and evolution. Although currently eradicated in Europe and USA, ALV-J is a scourge for the poultry industry in Asia and the risk of long-distance spread of the Asian variants still exists. Herein, the parallel of avian leukosis virus subgroup J and highly pathogenic avian influenza virus is used for explaining the peril of new outbreaks of viruses. In a long-term effort, our laboratory identified critical amino-acids of the Na+/H+ exchanger type 1, the receptor for avain leukosis virus subgroup J, which are necessary for virus binding and cell entry. This opens a way for biotechnological solution and creation of artificially resistant chickens.
