“The Caribbean Writer and Exile”. Intellectual Migration, Decolonization, and Jan Carew’s Prague

  • Original language description

The Guyanese-American intellectual Jan Carew is one of the Black intellectuals interested in the connections between the Cold War and the decolonization movement who were shaped by their experience in Cold War Czechoslovakia. The talk focuses on this group of thinkers from decolonizing countries who found refuge in Prague as students, workers, or visitors. It explores their published fiction, egodocuments, and archival evidence to reveal the transnational dimensions of the city, its place in the newly reformulated Black Atlantic, and Cold War Prague as a place of exile.
