“Intonazioni degli Ebrei” from Benedetto Marcello’s Estro poetico-armonico in Prague in 1729

  • Original language description

The most extensive work of Benedetto Marcello Estro poetico-armonico (1724–1727), was used in Prague in a truly unique manner by the impresario and librettist Antonio Denzio, performing at the so-called Sporck Theatre. The Archbishop of Prague granted his requests to perform during Lent a “Oratorio sacro ridotto a rappresentazione per musica” about the Old Testament hero Samson. The only known source of the work is the printed libretto, which is part of the Czech Count Johann Joseph von Wrtby (1669–1734) preserved collection of librettos, and gives evidence, that 1729 performance of the pasticcio Sansone featured also seven Hebrew chants from Marcello’s Estro poetico-armonico: Parafrasi sopra li salmi, distinguishing between their Sephardic and Ashkenazic origin.
