Migrants and migration in the linguistic landscape of Brno, Czechia
Original language description
The linguistic landscape – i.e. language and discourse in the material world - is an expression of social, cultural, economic, and political forces operating in a given locality. As migrants integrate into the host society, they gradually become visible in the linguistic landscape, as well. However, their incorporation into the local linguistic landscape is by no means straightforward. Question of power, identity and alterity shape their inclusion and the resulting landscape is not necessarily harmonical. Actually, a plurality of landscapes emerges as local inhabitants and migrants coin names for places associated with migrants whereby (self-)stereotypes are expressed and migrant life strategies are negotiated. In my paper I comment on the emerging migrant landscape of a Moravian city with some examples of specific names which have become part of the local linguistic landscape.
