Multilingualism in Bantu Languages
Original language description
Multilingualism in the Bantu language area is characterized by a complex contact situation involving vernacular languages, lingua francas, the former colonial languages, and globalized English. Social, political, and economic dynamics of the past 200 years have reconfigured the relationships between these four types of languages. This chapter provides an overview of research on multilingualism with a focus on Bantu languages in the context of three continuously expanding research areas: 1) Language in the City 2) Education 3) Globalization, Media, and the Arts. Providing some of the leading theoretical paradigms in the selected research areas, the chapter highlights the tensions of multiple language usage on the one hand, and complementarities of multilinguality on the other. It is argued that the study of multilingualism in Bantu language-speaking areas requires perpetual interrogation of established theoretical and methodological models in order to account for the high variability of the multilingual contact situations.
