The Old Czech Hapax Legomenon Domoskyna as a Modern Czech Poetic Expression
Original language description
The study deals with the Old Czech hapax legomenon „domoskyna“ and its transformation into a modern Czech poetic expression. The author focuses on the use of this obscure term by the Czech poet Vladimír Holan in his poem „The First Testament“ and examines its origin. The word is traced in the Old Czech Chapter Psalter, where it appears as a translation of the Latin phrase „nycticorax in domicilio“. The study examines the possible origin of the word „domoskyna“ and suggests that it is an artificial phrase influenced by Old Church Slavonic. It highlights the role of medieval translators as scholars enriching the language by creating neologisms and acknowledges their contribution to the aesthetic and conceptual aspects of the language, despite the short-lived nature of these experiments.
