    (In)correctness in Czech toponymy

  • Original language description

The paper compares different aspects of (in)correctness in toponyms. Five spheres of (in)correctness have been delimited: (1) appropriate realization of basic onymic functions (a toponym should unambiguously identify the named object and reliably distinguish it from the other objects in the given locality), (2) factual correctness, (3) linguistic correctness (displayed on several linguistic levels), (4) legal correctness (toponyms should be in accordance with the Municipalities Act), and (5) political correctness (a highly changeable sphere, resulting in frequent changes especially in street nomenclature). All of these aspects should be taken into account during the standardization of a name. However, rather many standardized names are “incorrect” in a way, their “incorrectness” may belong to any or all the aforementioned spheres. The most frequent conflicts are found in the linguistic sphere, they include even systematic conflicts resulting from changes of linguistic rules and their ignorance by local authorities.
