The Subordinators jak ‘how’ and že ‘that’ in Czech Content Clauses: A Case Study of vyprávět ‘to tell, to narrate’
Original language description
Using data from a representative corpus of written Czech, we compare content clauses following the verb vyprávět ‘to tell, to narrate’ introduced by že ‘that’ and jak ‘how.’ We show that Czech non-manner jak-clauses have a salient topic-raising function, as suggested in the literature on English, but using examples from English corpora, we cast some doubt on the claim that English how-clauses are necessarily factive. We also identify some contexts in which jak-clauses in Czech are dispreferred.
