In the 1950s and 1960s a number of countries cooperated on the development of a significant biotechnological (bioengineering) procedure of continuous cultivation of microorganisms. Key role in this collaboration was played by the Institute of Microbiology of dne CSAS, the British Microbiological Research Establishment Porton Down and other institutions and scientists.The network established across the Iron Curtain led to the formation of other economically and politically momentous international organizations.

Czech description
V 50. a 60. letech 20. stol. spolupracovala řada zemí na rozvoji významného biotechnologického (bioinženýrského) procesu kontinuálních kultivací mikroorganizmů. V této spolupráci hráli klíčovou roli Mikrobiologický ústav ČSAV, britská Microbiological Research Establishment Porton Down a další instituce a vědci. Vytvořila se tak síť napříč Železnou oponou, jež vedla k vytváření dalších hospodářsky a politicky významných mezinárodních organizací.
