The article explains the topic of the journal special issue that emerged from the conference titled “Eastern Enlargement, or an All-European Transformation? The 1990s in European Politics” held on 29 September 2022 in Ljubljana. It attempts to juxtapose two European stories: the story of Central and Eastern European transformation in the 1990s that included the negotiation of accession to the European Union on the one hand - and the story of the 1990s in Western Europe which involved a fundamental transformation of the European Union.
