Film Industries and Filmmakers between State Patronage and the Free Market

  • Original language description

This chapter maps the transformation of film industries in Central and Eastern Europe after 1989, with a special focus on Poland and Czech Republic. It examines how policies of privatization of existing film infrastructure led to greater tendencies toward commercialization and analyzes the reactions of filmmakers to these changes. While some actors—particularly an older generation of established filmmakers—understood film as “art,” private producers and a younger generation of filmmakers were more ready to approach film as “commodity.” This chapter explores this tension, arguing that the transformation of postsocialist film industries needs to be understood within a double framework of changing financial conditions and longer cultural continuities. The final part of the chapter looks at the ways in which, within these conditions, filmmakers attempted to portray the social and economic changes they witnessed.
