How statistical forces depend on thermodynamics and kinetics of driven media

  • Original language description

We study the effective force of a nonequilibrium environment on a slow probe. It is shown that close to equilibrium the isothermal work on the probe coincides with the excess work for the medium to relax to its new steady condition with a displaced probe. We also discuss the role of kinetics and the inherent nonadditivity of nonequilibrium forces.
