Nonstoichiometric engineering of YAP:Ce improved scintillation properties. Yttrium excess and deficiency in YAP:Ce alters concentrations of intrinsic defects. Scintillation light yield improved by 22 % for nonstoichiometric YAP:Ce. Scintillation decay time accelerated from 171 to 106 ns in nonstoichiometric YAP:Ce. Nonstoichiometric engineering presents a new strategy to optimize scintillators.
