Passivation of bulk defects in halide perovskites thin films by plasma treatment

  • Original language description

The recombination of electrons and holes at defect states in perovskite absorbers limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells. Defects primarily form at grain boundaries and surfaces, necessitating selective passivation. Removing thin surface layers via mechanical or laser polishing has been shown to enhance PCE. In this study, we investigated the effect of diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge (DCSBD) plasma treatment on perovskite thin films. Using in-situ photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, we found that plasma exposure in a nitrogen atmosphere initially decreased PL intensity due to surface defects. However, as oxygen was removed from the film, PL intensity increased, indicating reduced defect density. Prolonged exposure beyond complete oxygen removal negatively impacted the film. DCSBD plasma treatment shows potential as a preparatory step before passivation layer deposition and is compatible with large-scale production due to its established industrial use.
