Advances in diamond-coated QCM sensors for ethanol vapor detection

  • Original language description

Keeping the air we breathe clean is essential for a healthy planet. Among others, monitoring the ethanol concentration in the atmosphere is one of the key aspects following the above-mentioned issue. Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) is a robust sensing platform that enables the detection and quantification of various molecules, biomolecules, biomarkers, and even real-time monitoring of concentration trends. In support of this assertion, we present advancements in the deposition of diamond thin films on QCM sensors using linear antenna microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MW-PECVD). The fabricated diamond-covered QCMs (dia QCMs) demonstrated enhanced performance for ethanol vapor sensing at room temperature. The synthesis of individual dia-QCM sensors and the evaluation of their parameters are presented and critically evaluated. These findings indicate the potential for fabricating advanced dia-QCM sensors for various applications. Notably, O dia QCM (oxygen-terminated diamond-covered QCMs) showed up to 65 Hz response for ethanol vapor, which is more than 60 times higher than the conventional QCM sensor.
