Comments on reliability assessment methods and structural design codes in the computer era
Original language description
The Codes currently in use for Structural Steel Design worldwide are based mainly either on the Single Safety Factor (e.g., AISC ASD) or on Partial Reliability Factors Methods (e.g., AISC LRFD and Eurocodes). Both methods were developed and incorporatedin codes in the pre-computer era and from the designer?s point of view are deterministic. Obvious limitations of these methods are the subject of escalating discussion throughout the engineers? world. The computers allow for introducing fully probabilistic reliability assessment methods such as SBRA (Simulation-Based Reliability Assessment). The paper introduces this method and their applications.
