Modular multi-purpose X-ray device with dual-source and dual-energy scanning capability
Original language description
This paper is aimed at description of recently developed modular multi-purpose X-ray device (patent pending EPO 14002662.6-1559) and respective results from computed tomography (CT) scanning using high resolution dual-source method. The system was designed as a complex modular assembly with high flexibility and emphasis on dual-source and dual-energy measurements in high resolution. Thus, the overall system arrangement is realized by two cross-oriented scanning pairs with shared rotational stage and is similar to stationary setup (with constant magnification) described in [1]. However, in comparison with the referenced setup flexibility of the presented system is significantly improved as all parts are mounted on a complex 16-axis CNC positioning system. Therefore, both scanning pairs (X-ray tube and detector) can be easily arranged to arbitrary magnification (equal or different on both pairs) and thus measurement using dual-source (dual-energy) techniques can be tailored to specific application. The system is equipped with the following main parts: high energy reflection type X-ray tube, high resolution transmission type X-ray tube, two large area flat panel detectors (or one large area single photon counting imaging detector), high-precision air bearing rotational stage for object placement and two filter devices for beam hardening correction and tube spectra shaping. In the presented work identical geometrical (i.e. magnification, source-object and object-detector distances) and imaging parameters (i.e. focal spot size, beam geometry, its energy spectrum) were set on both pairs. Then investigated object was simultaneously irradiated by both scanning pairs to halve tomography scanning time. Here each pair acquired sequence of planar X-ray images in a half turn and images were then merged together and used for CT reconstruction. Prior to the CT scanning both scanning pairs were precisely adjusted using semi-automatic method for CT setup geometry calibration.
