X-ray investigation of the consolidation treatment

  • Original language description

The work deals with the experimental X-ray investigation of a consolidation treatment of stone. One of the consolidation techniques is the application of liquid consolidating agent onto a surface of a porous deteriorated object (structural consolidation). The liquid containing molecules (ions) or particles of the new binding material penetrates into the object and increases its density. Knowledge of the increase in material density and distribution of the new binding compound beneath the surface of the treated object are essential in terms of gained cohesion and other mechanical characteristics. Several specimens made of Maastricht limestone treated with nano-lime dispersions in alcohol (CaLoSil E25, E50) compared to saturated solutions (Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2) in water are studied. Time-lapse process of drying of a liquid medium and the resulting material density distribution within the specimen are successfully observed using difference transmission radiography. The difference radiography requires the use of the digital image correlation method for a precise image alignment in the case of long lasting experiment where unwanted and inevitable changes in imaging conditions take a place.
