Crystal Lattice Misorientation Treated as Plastic Instability Phenomenon

  • Original language description

The misorientations spontaneously emerging in a homogeneously deforming crystal are treated as an instability of non-linear continuum mechanics origin, in quite the same way as the localization of deformation in shear bands and necking. Accordingly, plastic deformation becomes spontaneously non-homogeneous, either on the micro- or macroscopic level, if it is energetically more convenient than to continue the homogeneous deformation. To be able to follow the development of the instabilities into later stages the geometrically non-linear (large strain) formulation of continuum mechanics should be used. However, in order to decide whether the homogeneous plastic flow becomes unstable or not, one uses in the first instance the linear stability (bifurcation) analysis. In this case, only one step beyond the standard linear theory is needed
