Multiscale Modeling of Woven Composites with Imperfect Microstructure
Original language description
A comprehensive approach to the modelling of composite materials with a complex microstructure is discussed in the present contribution. Two different modelling strategies are examined. The first one assumes a well defined geometry of the microstructurearrangement and specific boundary conditions. In this framework, the complicated real microstructure is replaced by a substantially simpler periodic unit cell, which still statistically resembles the real microstructure. Periodic distribution of such unit cells is explored and the finite element method is called to carry out the numerical simulation. The theoretical basis for the second approach is the Hashin-Shtrikman variational principles. The random character of the fiber distribution is incorporated directly into the variational formulation employing certain statistical descriptors.
