Preferential flow as a source of fast transport in the vadoze zone of the Czech Upland Basins
Original language description
In headwater catchments of the Czech Basin soil profile mostly consists of coarse sandy loams formed on weathered crystalline bedrock. Existence of preferential flow, detected over these areas at several scales, makes the use of traditional flow and transport simulation models inadequate. Origins of preferential flow have been studied on undisturbed soil samples by means of fully controlled infiltration outflow experiments in combination with nondestructive visualization of the sample structure using X-ray computer tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance (MR). The acquired information has been employed to evaluate parameters of dual permeability models, which on the principle of two flow domains (fast and slow), enabled better prediction of the outflow hydrograph including preferential flow.
