Experimental Detection and Evaluation of Preferential Flow in Soils
Original language description
During the last 2 decades it has been realized that the movement of contaminants through the soil profile may be rapid and the process is not described well using standard tools. One of the main reasons responsible for the fast breakthrough is the preferential flow. Attention has been paid to the preferential flow in soils formed on crystalline rocks. A methodology to detect the preferential flow and to study its dynamics on undisturbed soil samples in the laboratory was developed. In a fully controlledinfiltration outflow experiment the continual data sets supply inputs to inverse simulation models to derive soil hydraulic functions. These characteristics are then used in numerical models built up to simulate flow and transport processes in the soilprofile on the principle of dual permeability. The proportion of the preferential flow under various initial conditions was studied using the MRI visualization. Together with the preferential flow also the flow instability was detected.
