On the Influence of Sun Radiation to the Deformation of St. Vitus' Cathedral, Prague
Result description
This paper deals with the influence of solar radiation on the deformations of Saint Vitus' Cathedral, which falls within the UNESCO World Heritage reserve. For future preservation of the Cathedral it is important to determine potential displacements of its load bearing structure, which can be done by geodetic measurement. It was supposed that the measured displacements were caused by the temperature extensibility of Saint Vitus' masonry. Theoretical analysis of the displacements requires the best possible approximation of temperature differences inside the structure between the particular stages of measurement of these deformations. Numerical simulation with the influence of solar radiation was used for this purpose. The comparison of the computed and measured values (of displacements) confirmed the hypothesis that the measured displacements were mainly caused by the temperature extensibility of the structure.
