Critical Gap Estimating for Czech Unsignalized Intersections
Original language description
Reliable estimates of critical gaps form an important input to the calculation of capacity of unsignalized intersections. Various statistical methods and tools were used in the past. The most present-day method is based on the maximum-likelihood approach. The classical maximum-likelihood method must be modified because critical gaps are not directly observable. The modified maximum-likelihood approach was applied on the data from 40 unsignalized intersections in Czech Republic. Excel solver was used when looking for maximum-likelihood estimates of parameters. Several numerical problems forced us to suggest a complementary method which can be used in cases with few or untypical data. Similar but not exactly the same results were obtained as in Germany,2001. The analysis of effects of various factors shows interesting and helpful results.
