Flow Resistance over Plane Bed with Intense Sediment Transport

Result description

Flow resistance is discussed of mobile beds at high shear stress. Experimental data from both a pressurized pipe (own data) and a laboratory flume (Smart 1984 data) confirm a close relation between sediment transport and flow resistance. A mobile-bed friction formula is proposed for steady flows with intense sediment transport in the upper plane bed regime. The friction formula is derived from a transport formula of the MPM type and the Smart's data are in a very reasonable agreement with the proposed formula.
