Study on impact of wetting time on liquid limit value of smectitic clays

  • Original language description

Smectitic clays are characterized by specific properties (low permeability, swelling, etc.) which fully meet the requirements for the sealing material of deep repositories for radioactive waste. The smectitic clay (bentonite) barrier will be fully saturated with water and exposed to heat loading over the long term. Such conditions will necessarily bring about changes in the geotechnical properties of the barrier. The liquid limit is one of the most important geotechnical properties of clays and determining liquid limit values allows the subsequent determination of changes in the structure and composition of the clay following loading (heat loading, influence of compacting, etc.). However, liquid limit values are dependent on the method selected for testing and it is important that the results obtained are correctly interpreted. [1] Moreover, during the performance of experiments on bentonites at the Centre of Experimental Geotechnics (CEG) it was found not only that the liquid limit is
