The methodology for flood frequency estimations in small catchments

  • Original language description

: It is usually quite difficult to estimate flood frequency parameters in small catchments due to lack of measured discharge data in the Czech Republic which is similar situation as in other countries. This problem is usually solved by hydrologic modelling when there is a reason not to use the data provided by the Czech hydrometeorological institute which are quite costly and have a very poor level of accuracy. Another way could be to use some simple method which would provide sufficient estimates of flood frequency based on the available spatial data. Such method is being developed at the Department of Irrigation, Drainage and Landscape Engineering. The methodology is being developed with involvement of all important factors affecting flood formationin small catchments. It has a shape of product of mathematical functions of selected catchment descriptors as well as of precipitation total with given return period.
