Swelling Clays and High Level Radioactive Waste Disposal ? A Selection of Specific Geotechnical Tests
Original language description
The construction of a deep geological repository for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the Czech Republic will require the use of several hundred thousand tons of natural swelling clay. The main function of the compacted bentonite sealant willbe to limit water transport around the canister containing spent fuel. The key geotechnical parameters therefore consist of hydraulic conductivity, swelling pressureand plasticity. Both the strength properties and thermal propertiesare also of significantimportance. It will be essential that all the parameters remain stable for a very long period of time (thousands of years). The selfsealing of the joints or potential cracks within the bentonite sealing barrier will assist in maintaining the integrity of the system. Several of these parameters are currently under investigation according to standards widely used in the civil engineering sector. However, the use of bentonite in such a unique construction project raises specific questions
