Effect of Cation Type on Chloride Binding in Building Stones

  • Original language description

Experimental investigations of the effect of cation type on the chloride-ion binding in two different types of building stones used over the Central European territory from the Gothic epoch until the end of the 19th century are presented. The measurement of salt binding isotherms as the main characteristics of the ion binding capacity is performed by the adsorption method. The chloride- and cation concentrations are measured using the ion chromatography. The obtained results show that the type of cation is a significant factor affecting the total mass of bound chlorides. NH4Cl is found to have the highest binding capacity, KCl the lowest, and NaCl is in between.
