A composite structure consisting of several parallel I-beams connected to a concrete deck is favourably used for middle span bridges and in many cases such a girder is continuous over several spans, though some specific complications in design occur in this case. One of them is lateral buckling of the bottom part of the section over the inner support (hogging bending region). There is no analytical solution for this type of buckling (lateral distortional buckling) and approximate solutions are used notonly for real structures with imperfections but also for theoretically ideal structures. This paper refers to research being in progress on a study of a structure consisting of two plate bridge girders connected to a concrete deck. This study assesses different design approaches to the inverted U-frame model action and searches for an optimal way of design.
