Original language description
The subject of this article is an experimental and numerical analysis of a timber element embedded perpendicular to grain. A traditional butt joint transfers the loading through contact areas of timber elements. One of the timber elements is exposed to compressive stresses perpendicular to grain. A compressive strength perpendicular to grain is relatively low. Large embedment arises due to lower rigidity of the material in tangential or radial direction. Alternative new detail has higher rigidity than the traditional butt joint. A new solution of an embedment is compared with a commonly used form of a connection on two sets of test specimens. The next part of the experiment is aimed to a verification of deformation at several places in a timber elementusing sequential scanning at high resolution. In the case of a new design detail increase in stiffness from the stress-strain diagram is noticeable. This fact is confirmed by a numerical model using the finite element method.
